1. General Education Plan

The General Education Plan for science majors is a set of curricular guidelines issued by the School of Sciences at Tsinghua University. The purpose is to educate students with integrity by strengthening the specialized courses on top of a sound base of general courses. Undergraduates of all majors within the School of Sciences are required by this plan to complete certain fundamental (core) courses apart from courses specific to their majors. Often, these fundamental courses must be completed prior to the students’ enrollment in more specialized or advanced courses. The plan also specifies the number of credits students must receive to graduate. The plan has proven to be an effective education platform for students with diverse academic interests.

2. Duration

The Undergraduate Program offers a four-year route to the Bachelor’s degree. The programs are delivered in Chinese or bilingually in Chinese and English. Every academic year is divided into three semesters: fall, spring and summer. The fall or spring semester has eighteen weeks. The summer semester has ten weeks, during which the students can enroll for additional courses (five weeks, practical training involved), carry out overseas internships, and take a summer break.

3. Credits

The total number of credits required by the teaching plan is 153, which includes 47 credits for general courses, 84 credits for specialized courses, 10 credits for practical courses in the summer semester, and 12 credits for research-oriented training (called Seminar) and writing the bachelor thesis.
